Changes at Nook

As the demand for our interior design service has grown, we have decided to adapt our high street premises to reflect this. Although we will still be selling some items in our shop, we will be mainly using the space as a design studio. Therefore, we will only be open to browsers on an ad hock basis.

When the famous nook bike is outside, we will be open!

We are very excited about these changed and hope that our loyal customers will continue to support us.

Busy Busy Busy!

We're lovely and busy here at Nook this spring.

We're working on a couple of projects for private clients that are coming along nicely that will really create a luxurious and fresh look.

We're also super excited to be designing a scheme at one of Birmingham's most talked about buildings! The new show apartment is being fitted next week and we can't wait to show you the pictures of the fabulous design that Hayley has created!

Give your home the wow factor!

Give your home the wow factor!

Give your home the wow factor and make it stand out from the crowd with the help of Nook!

Follow Hayley’s top tips and create a home that will really shine!

Look through interior design magazines to get inspiration and ideas on current trends.  Keep an eye on catwalk trends and the fashion industry to reflect styles, patterns and fabrics in interior design.  Look at fashion magazines too and get a feel for the fabrics and overall style coming through.

Neutral walls may not be exciting, but vibrant colours are great for brightening up a room.  Rather than using colour on the walls use it in scatter cushions, throws and accessories against a neutral backdrop. Not only does this look much nicer, but it also means you can change your look without having to get out the paintbrush!

Emulate a cosmopolitan city hotel and create a sensational master bedroom using oversized headboards, low lighting and sumptuous fabrics. A stylish bed to show off your bedroom to its full potential can be created by covering your existing divan base in the same fabric as the headboard.  Armed with a staple gun and just a few minutes to spare, you’ll have a designer bed in no time.

Create the feeling of extra space and light using mirrors.  Perfect for any room, mirrors instantly make a room look and feel bigger and brighter.  For a real wow factor create a mirrored wall – it works especially well in hallways.

Oversized standard lamps are perfect for filling up space in a room as well as creating a warm, homely atmosphere, but to really finish a room and give it that showhome look, think about the small details such as vases, candles, table coasters and photos.  These are all things that make a house a home and when in keeping with the colour scheme and décor you’ve created they will give it that perfect touch.

Nook at home

One of our lovely loyal customers has sent us a picture of her home!  We thought we'd share it with you as it shows a number of pieces from Nook that we've either hand picked from one of our buying trips or lovingly restored to give a new lease of life.

We love how the use of colour brightens up the pale walls and grey furniture, creating a quirky retro feel!

We're always happy to see our favourite pieces find a new home where we know they will be cherished and looked after so if you have any photos of your Nook purchases then send them in so we can all have a nose!

New Stock Now In!

After a busy few days travelling around Europe, we're now back with a shop full of stylish and unique pieces for the home!  As well as lots of amazing home accessories, we found stunning lamps and vases along with some gorgeous cushions we know you'll love!

Although we're still the wrong side of Halloween and Bonfire night to be thinking about it, we're super organised at Nook, so our beautiful Christmas decorations are now sitting proudly on display for you all to come and admire!

As always, we only stock a small number of each piece that we sell in the shop, so to avoid disappointment, make sure you pop in for a mooch before it all goes!

Industrial Chic

If you’ve watched any Home Improvement TV shows of late, it would have been difficult for you to miss the ever growing trend of ‘Vintage’. As more and more people are becoming increasingly resourceful in these tough economic times, there is a huge popularity to use found objects, the need to be sustainable and reuse/repurpose, and of course the return to crafting, as championed by Kirsty Allsop.

And with the increased desire for an edgier look, we at Nook believe using statement pieces that have an industrial vibe and mixing them with softer, more feminine pieces, can create the bang-on-trend look that has been gracing all the interiors magazines for the last few months.

But of course, as with many design looks, there is a correct way to pull it off successfully! The danger with experimenting with ‘Industrial Chic’ is that it can look cold, masculine and hard. We like to think our look here at Nook is pretty eclectic. We mix vintage, contemporary, rustic and elegant pieces to create a unique, inviting and homely style.

Statement pieces, such as this large clock from Nook, can set the look for the room, and be softened with patterned fabrics and tactile furnishings. You may only need one piece that has that edgy, unique or vintage feel that you can then work around within your scheme. This also means you have not invested too much into the trend, and the piece can be replaced to revamp the room when your tastes change. Or if you’re feeling a little braver, using a piece of more industrial style furniture, such as a botanical console table from Nook, and dressing it up with softer accessories such as flower displays, cake stands and candles will bring the contemporary look into your home.

Keeping things fresh and interesting in your home is important to not only continue to stimulate you but also your guests, so changing a piece of lighting can dramatically alter the feel of a room, and changing a table lamp for something more unique like the this green lamp will add a different dimension to your scheme and add interest.

Here at Nook we believe it’s those finishing touches that make all the difference to a scheme. Attention to detail is the difference between a good room and a fantastic room. Being creative and being brave can pay off, so give it a go!

Decorating with Autumn's dark shades

We must face the reality that what little summer we had is now over, and we are entering my favourite season, Autumn. It is at this time of year, when the nights begin to draw in and the once bright flora and fauna starts to deepen in colour, that a much richer palette starts to engulf us. And it is this moody end of the colour spectrum that inspires room schemes that are full of deep drama.

Using rich colours such as purples, deep blues and sophisticated teals are a great way of injecting impact into your scheme. For example, highlight a key wall in a rich enveloping purple, and subtly connect it with the rest of the room by adding either an upholstered chair in a similar hue, or accessories such as a set of indigo velvet cushions strewn on the sofa, or a display of dark purple orchids on a side table. Here at Nook we have a fabulous selection of beautiful faux flowers, the orchids being some of our favourites

Alternatively, if you are feeling brave, and at Nook we always encourage our clients to be brave as it always pays off, then using more than one moody hue will create a dramatic and opulent look. Lift a lush backdrop of green and teal with an equally strong contrasting shade, such as a rich red, and this will add punch while retaining the luxe mood.

Another, more subtle way that I tend to be inspired in Autumn is by introducing natural textures and materials into the house. Nature changes so beautifully during this season that we tend to notice more the texture on the bark of a tree, or the depth of colour on an Autumnal leaf. This beautiful tree trunk lamp base with a deep purple shade, sold at Nook, is quirky enough to add character to your home, but at the same time echoes the serenity we feel from the great outdoors.

And finally, as always, accessories play a key part in adapting your home to the seasons. I feel it is very important as the weather changes outdoors to alter your environment indoors. It is getting colder, so thick woollen throws and comfy cushions are a must for an inviting space to snuggle up in. Pop into Nook for those key items that will make your home a haven as Autumn draws in.
